Dr Julia Bland is a psychiatrist, psychoanalytic psychotherapist and systemic family and couple therapist. After reading English at Oxford, she studied Medicine at Guy's and trained in Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at St.George's, also completing training at the Lincoln Clinic and the Prudence Skynner Family Therapy Clinic. She is registered with the BPC and UKCP.
She worked in the NHS from 1982 until 2015, and was a Consultant Medical Psychotherapist and Head of Family Therapy in the South London and Maudsley NHS trust from 2002 until 2013. She was Co-Director of MedNet, a service for doctors based at the Tavistock and the Maudsley, until the service ended in 2015.
Dr Bland has a longstanding interest in the health of health professionals, and now works in private practice as a member of the Queen Anne St Group Practice, seeing individuals, families and couples. She is interested in the overlaps between different therapeutic modalities, having contributed chapters in Systems and Psychoanalysis (Karnac 2003) and the Oxford Textbook of Medical Psychotherapy (in press). She is also interested in outcome measurement in psychotherapy, and was lead investigator in the development of SCORE, an internationally recognised measure of family change.
